2008 YPF Forum

After the success of the original Young People's Forum in 2006, the YPF Committee decided to hold another seminar in Brisbane on the 22 May in conjunction with the usual APIA Brisbane Seminar.

The morning YPF Stream was aimed at providing an “introductory” session for newer young members as well as provide broader input and discussion about the future for the more experienced younger members. The 64 YPFers in attendance learnt about the depth through presentations on Environment, Operations, Construction & Safety, Design & Materials, Project Management and Economics and Regulation.

In the afternoon there was a joint session where the two groups joined to learn about generational change and preparing the industry for the future. Professional psychologist, Avril Henry set a challenge to all attendees to think about leadership and the future of the industry.

APIA would like to thank all the participants in all the sessions and to APA Group for sponsoring the Seminars. Thanks also to the bosses who sent their YPFers.

National Energy Essay Competition

Now the international organisation, The Warren Centre, has heard about YPF and want to raise awareness amongst APIA’s younger members about the National Energy Essay Competition, details of which can be found at www.neec.org.au. According to the Warren Centre, the competition is about Australia’s energy future. Specifically, it is about the next phase of primary power generation and the future beyond that. It is also about the younger generation and their contribution to Australia’s energy industry development.

The competition is open to individuals and teams with a maximum of three members, who must all be Australian citizens or Permanent Residents and under the age of 31 years at 30 th June 2008.

National YPF Networking Event

On Wednesday 21 May, in Brisbane, YPFers from around the nation gathered at the Jade Buddah, Eagle Street Pier for the largest YPF Networking Session to date. A great night was had by the 61 attendees. Thanks goes to Bayside Group for providing nibbles.

NT YPF Tour

The NT YPF organised a tour of the Bonaparte Gas Pipeline construction for Friday 27 of June. The mostly young group of 10, including 3 interstate pipeliners, left Darwin before dawn, meeting Richard Cherney, APA Group’s Construction Manager for the Bonaparte Gas Pipeline Project at camp 2, approximately 2.5 hrs from Darwin. The YPF group were lucky to get out and see (when the dust settled) most aspects of pipeline construction in action including stringing, pipe bending, trenching, welding, coating, coating testing and repairs, pipe lowering and back filling. Richard was very informative at each stop and fielded all the YPFers questions.

NT YPF would like to thank Sargent for providing flashing lights for the vehicles, NT Gas for the use of their 4WD vehicles and all who attended for making it a great (12 hour) day. We would also like to thank APA Group and A.J. Lucas for their generous time and patience as well all the companies that supported the attendees and their ongoing support of the YPF charter.

Queensland Sight Visit

On 4 December 23 YPFers donned orange vests, steel capped boots and hardhats to visit the Western Corridor Recycled Water Project’s Western Pipeline. On this site visit we were able to see some of the large diameter pipe being laid, insertion of the pipe into the Bremer River crossing (via large vertical shafts) and many road crossings. It was an enjoyable day for all who attended. Thank you to Daniel Turcinovich for being our guide and to Lara Kayess, Georgina Day and Leon Richards for organising the visit.

NATIONAL YPF Networking Event

On Saturday 20 October at the 2007 APIA Annual Convention, a group of YPFers and their friends met for pre-dinner drinks at the Hydrate Bar, Royal Pines Resort.  It was an excellent start to a great night.  About 35 YPFers were able to attend.

NATIONAL YPF TELECONFERENCE

On Tuesday 23 October the national YPF committee met face-to-face at the 2007 APIA Convention. As the members of the national committee are based in the capital cities, YPF national committee meetings have always been held via teleconference, so it was the very first time they were able to meet in person. This meeting was very successful with the committee discussing some good ideas for the 2008 YPF seminar in Brisbane next year.

Joint Technical Meeting, Canberra, 16 - 20 April 2007

Earlier this year, APIA provided an opportunity for six young engineers from the Research and Standards Committee’s member companies to participate in the International Joint Technical Meeting by offering scholarships to cover the travel and accommodation costs of each recipient. Attendance at this major international conference equipped the participants with knowledge about important industry research and introduced them to many international industry experts. The successful applicants were: Christopher Jones (BlueScope Steel), Mohd Hisham Bin Abu Bakar (PETRONAS), Mark Dragar (Alinta), Peter Barnett (GHD), Anthony Cobiac (Epic Energy) and Nicholas Scott (WorleyParsons).
