Facts & Figures

  • Pipelines are used to transmit different forms of gas and other liquids such as oil, slurry and water.
  • Pipelines are a valuable form of infrastructure in Australia.
  • Australia's first pipeline was commissioned to transmit water to the Coolgardie gold fields in the late 1800s. This set a world-wide precedent by being more than ten times longer than any other pipeline.
  • The first Australian pipeline built for the purpose of oil transmission was in 1964 and was the Moonie to Brisbane. At the time of construction it was the longest high-pressure pipeline in Australia at 306 kilometres.
  • Gas transmission is a large percentage of the pipelines in Australia today. Recent figures show there are more than of 29,000 kilometres of pipeline in Australia, of which more than 21,000 kilometres are used to transmit natural gas.
  • Natural gas is the third most important energy commodity in Australia, providing an estimated 20% of Australia's energy requirements and this figure is set to double over the next two decades.
