APIA manages many issues on behalf of members, including: economic regulation of gas transmission pipelines, environmental challenges, heritage protection, safety standards and requirements; operations, and challenges and opportunities for water pipelines.

APIA's Research and Standards committee conducts internationally recognised research programs and how developed (with regulators) the highly regarded national standards AS 2885.
