Vic Committee

The Victorian Young Pipeliners Forum (YPF) has over 100 members with a range of professions in the pipeline industry. The Victorian YPF aims to equip its members with information of industry projects, access to experienced industry professionals, opportunities to visit sites and it facilitates the YPF members meeting other YPF members.

Networking provides people to share experiences, gain knowledge and have some fun. The pipeline industry is unique and the YPF aims to assist in the development of the industry’s younger members.

The Victorian YPF organises several functions annually. These functions include:

*         Speaker nights – a chance to meet with other YPF members and listen to a presentation on an industry related topic over some beer

*         Mentor events – a chance to meet experienced pipeliners in a ’speed mentoring’ fashion, contact details can be exchanged and a relationship is established so that YPF members can talk to experienced pipeliners at other APIA functions

*         Site visits – an opportunity to get out to site and see some action, last year’s site visit was to see the construction of the Sugarloaf Pipeline, this year’s visit is currently being organised

*         Networking events – an informal gathering after work for YPF members to catch up and chat

Vic Speaker Night – 28 July 2011

On Thursday 28th July approximately 20 Victorian YPF’ers met at the Bull and Bear Tavern for a networking and speaker night.

Current Victorian YPF member Ben Gliwa from Tenix completed a presentation on Network Pressure Regulation associated with Natural Gas Pipelines. The presentation included an overview of the operation of pressure regulation facilities within SP Ausnet’s Distribution network including City Gate, Field and District Regulating sites. Ben also covered the different equipment used within each of these sites and the issues that field staff face when dealing with the temperature losses associated with pressure reduction.

Ben’s presentation not only offered an insight into pressure regulation for those not exposed to it as part of their daily work but also triggered some interesting conversations after the presentation with those that currently work within the same field.

Again the night was enjoyed by all with plenty of opportunities to catchup with new and existing YPF’ers aswell as learning about a different area of the pipeline industry.

A special thanks to Ben Gliwa for his presentation and to Tenix for sponsoring the event.

Vic Mentoring Event – 2 June 2011

The Victorian YPF had their second successful mentoring session proudly sponsored by Peter Norman Personnel. This was a great opportunity for Q&A’s and career development for young pipeliners.

The event drew healthy participation for both mentors and protégés. The YPF committee would like to thank to all those who attended, especially the Mentors from Nacap, OSD Pipelines, Worley Parsons, APA Group, JP Kenny, Epic Energy, KBR, Solar Turbines and Peter Norman Personnel for donating time from their busy schedules.

The event consisted of the Mentors remaining at their seats and the protégés rotating every 10 minutes to a new Mentor. The Mentors demonstrated a wide variety of experience and diversity, ranging from specialised engineers to Commercial Managing Directors with worldwide operating experience.

It can be difficult to gain advice across all areas of the pipeline industry, whether it is technical advice, career advice or just general advice. Initial feedback has been very positive and the committee encourages all attendants to submit their comments to build and improve the event for next year.

We look forward to seeing you all again at the next event.

Vic YPF Bowls Night – 31 March 2011

The Vic YPF Bowls night was held on 31 March and was proudly supported by Denso. The night was mild which was great as the weather has been fairly cold in Melbourne.

None of the YPFers had played lawn bowls before but everyone was inspired by the Melbourne movie Crackerjack. So after a few learning trial shots, everyone was up and bowling. Overall, people didn’t bowl too badly, despite some gutter balls and maybe a few that classified as ‘The Flipper’.

Everyone had a great night playing over pizza and beer and Denso presented a dinner voucher for the best bowler. This year’s winner was Paul McMullen from Solar Turbines.
