2010 Events

Vic YPF Speaker Night - 9th December 2010

The final YPF event for the year was a Speaker Night at the Bull and Bear Tavern. About 20 people attended for a networking event which featured Peter Tuft. The event was sponsored by Peter Normal Personnel, who put on a fabulous spread of food and of course, the beer.

Peter has been in the industry for many years and is involved in committee work and that latest research and technology. Peter gave a 20 minute presentation on the committees and research going on in the pipeline industry and provided contacts of people to find out more information or to find out if we could join.

Since the industry is ageing, there have been more opportunities for younger people to get involved without having the experience which may have been required 20 years ago.

Being on a committee is so much more than doing work for the industry, it is also about networking and learning and development.

A special thanks to Peter Tuft for exposing us to an exciting part of the industry and to Peter Norman for his generosity to make it all happen.

Vic YPF Desalination Plant Site Visit - 18th October 2010

Members of the Victorian Young Pipeliners Forum visited the Victorian Desalination Project and associated pipeline on 18 October 2010.

Victoria’s new desalination plant will be capable of delivering a secure source of water to Melbourne, Geelong and some regional communities.

Once the group had been introduced, the 25 young pipeliners hopped on a bus – provided by Sargent – to see the project with their own eyes.

The desalination plant will be connected to Melbourne and regional water networks via an 84km, 1.9m diameter transfer pipeline, which is currently being constructed by the Thiess Degrémont Nacap Joint Venture.

On the way to the plant site, the group stopped over at the Bass River, one of 16 water crossings on the project. They were able to view the pipe jacking process, which involves digging a vertical shaft either side of the river and using an underground boring machine to push pipe through the ground with minimal surface disruptions.

Special thanks go to our sponsors – Brooke Bishop and Grant Harrison of Sargent, Matthew O’Connell from Nacap, and Danielle Gardner, Graeme Tait and Stacy Pipikos from the joint venture partners.

Vic YPF Speaker Night - 14th October 2010

The YPF Victorian Speaker Night was held on Thursday 14th October at the Waterside Hotel in Melbourne. Twenty five YPFers attended to network and to learn about the industry. The networking allows people to catch up with other members and to facilitate discussion over finger food and drinks.

The topic for the evening was about the Australian Gas Industry Trust (AGIT). This was chosen because AGIT offers an invaluable service to the gas industry, particularly in terms of development. The speakers for the night were Andrew Creek, a director of AGIT and Kristy Brincat from OSD Pipelines.

Andrew provided a history of AGIT and spoke about what AGIT offers to people working in the gas industry such as Gas Speak and the Study Tour, which are annual events for people to participate in. Andrew spoke about the benefits and how to apply for the events.

Kristy went on the Study Tour in 2009 and her presentation was on this adventure. She spoke about the companies they visited and what she learnt about the industry as well as personal learnings regarding her career.

The Speaker Nights would not be successful without sponsorship from the industry. The sponsors for this event were AGIT and OSD Pipelines.

Vic YPF Mentoring Event - 3rd June 2010

The mentoring event in 2010 was held at the Hilton on the Park in conjunction with the APIA dinner. The room was set up with chairs and tables and 15 mentors were matched with 15 mentees. The event was designed to be informal providing younger people in the industry an opportunity to meet more experienced people and to seek industry related guidance.

The mentees rotated in intervals to talk to different mentors. It was fabulous to get advice on career paths, tips for success in engineering and information on topics of interest. It also was a great chance to meet people and network.

Mentors and mentees had different engineering backgrounds which made the session useful and interesting. The mentors were generous with their time and knowledge and it was interesting to see the range of career paths that are available in the industry.

The event was enjoyed by all, surprisingly the mentors had an equally good time!
